Match Report: Hebburn Town 1-1 Newton Aycliffe

David Coulthard8 Oct - 20:44

The Hornets progressed in the Durham Challenge Cup following a penalty shootout win.

Hebburn Town progressed to the second round of the Durham Challenge Cup following a penalty shootout win over Newton Aycliffe.

The opening exchanges had few opportunities before Joe Posthill was fouled right on the edge of the area in the seventh minute, giving the home side a free kick in a promising position. Olly Martin fired the set piece straight into the wall.

A minute later there was a nervy moment when Callum Dobson smashed his clearance against an Aycliffe player, but the ball ricocheted wide.

On 14, Aidan Heywood whipped the ball in, but James Pollard managed to push it away to safety.

At the midway point of the first half Hebburn worked a free kick well when Martin played a one-two with Heywood, before Martin's ball in found the head of Amar Purewal, who had Pollard scrambling but the ball went narrowly wide.

Aycliffe had a great opportunity in the 29th minute when Wayne Whitfield ran at the Hebburn defence, but Matty Elsdon made a good block and forced it behind for a corner.

Two minutes later Dobson had to parry away well following some pressure in the Hebburn half.

In the 39th minute, it was the visitors who drew first blood when a ball across the face of goal was turned home by Whitfield at the back stick.

A half time change for the Hornets seen captain Purewal leave the field to be replaced by Bailey Adamson, with Heywood taking the armband.

Straight from the restart Posthill twisted away from his man and hit the target but it was straight at Pollard.

On 58, Aycliffe had a shout for a penalty but Geoff Eltringham waved play on with Hebburn launching a counter attack at the other end but Posthill eventually overhit his pass to Martin.

At the midway point in the second period, Matty Elsdon hit a firm shot that was blocked with the ball spinning to Bailey Adamson who blazed over the bar.

Pollard then saved again from an Adamson header but he was judged to be offside.

Hebburn drew level with ten minutes left when Leo Robinson was fouled in the box and Martin converted the spot kick low under Pollard's body.

Hebburn then upped the pressure in the final ten minutes with Adamson forcing a save from Pollard from close range, but Aycliffe almost won it when Whitfield's effort across goal was just inches wide of the post with three minutes left.

The final chance fell Hebburn's way when Daniel Moore headed over the top.

With the tie going straight to penalties, Martin, Robinson, Joe Walton, Elsdon and Heywood all held their nerve whilst Callum Dobson saved the first spot kick down to his left to see the Hornets through to the second round.
