The Hornets secured victory against a resilient Prescot Cables side, courtesy of second half goals from Amar Purewal and Jack Donaghy.
However, the match turned out to be nothing short of a first half thriller which saw 2 red cards and 2 missed penalties.
Hebburn had a strong start to the match with Purewal getting in behind the Cable’s defence in the opening minute, but only missing by a fraction as the ball flew right up past the crossbar.
The Hornets managed to draw a number of free-kicks in good positions throughout the first half, with Purewal knocking the ball towards Liam Noble, but his shot ended up in the keepers' hands.
Likewise in the 17th minute, Noble took a free-kick, but it was cleared by the Prescot defence.
However, the Cables were no easy opponents as they had plenty of opportunities in Hebburn’s box.
In the 11th & 15th minutes, Prescot were awarded free-kicks in crucial positions, which allowed them to have their earliest opportunity on goal. However, they could not convert, and the ball was cleared by the Hornets defence.
The referee made his presence known in the 13th minute as he booked Liam Hollett of Prescot Cables who committed a foul, before three minutes later, showing him a second yellow card and sending him for an early bath.
Hebburn were awarded a free kick, which saw Aidan Heywood play a shrewd low drive, but nothing more came of it. Two minutes later, Olly Martin was the first Hornets player to be shown a yellow card.
In the 19th minute, arguably the most entertaining point of the match; a second red card was shown to Cables. James Foley blocked Martin’s shot at goal as he punched the ball over the crossbar with his hand
which was spotted by the referee and resulted in a second sending off, before awarding a penalty to the Hornets.
Purewal stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort crashes off the crossbar, much to the delight of Prescott keeper Calvin Hare.
However, in the 28th minute, Hebburn were awarded a second penalty of the afternoon after a cables defender fouled Joao Gomes in the penalty box. This time, Martin stepped up to take penalty duties, but his effort was well saved by Hare.
The Prescot keeper was clearly keeping his side in the game making numerous saves to frustrate the Hornets by keeping them at bay.
After these two gruelling ordeals, Hebburn’s frustration continued to grow throughout the match, as narrow misses on goal by Heywood and Martin, cemented Hebburn's need for some sort of breakthrough.
The second half had its own fair share of key moments as Cables were beginning to grow in confidence, despite only having nine players on the pitch, as time wasting became apparent.
The referee therefore booked goalkeeper Prescot keeper Hare in the 49th minute for time wasting.
As Hebburn’s frustrations mounted, so did the errors. In the 52nd minute, a Hebburn player committed a foul on Prescot’s Jack Goodwin, which saw the away side awarded a free-kick. Ten minutes later, Cables were awarded another free-kick after James Devine was fouled.
The Hornets first change came in the 63rd minute after Dan Savage was replaced by Bailey Adamson.
Hebburn finally made the deserved breakthrough they were looking for in the 65th minute; Purewal slammed the ball past Cables keeper Hare after cleverly capitalising off a rebound save he initially made.
After the goal, Hebburn’s confidence revitalised as the Hornets created plenty more chances. Purewal, Liam Murray and Noble had perfectly accurate shots on target, but were all stopped by Cable’s keeper Hare, who was in fine form throughout the game.
Hebburn thought they had scored their second goal of the afternoon in the 77th minute, but it was ruled out for offside by the linesman.
The Cables made 2 substitutions within 3 minutes, taking off Alex McNally for Michael Bartley, and Kyle Sambor for Liam Goldling.
In stoppage time, with one minute left to play, the Hornets won a corner. Noble whipped the ball into the box and a decisive header by Donaghy put the game to bed as Hebburn went 2-0 up.
Shortly after, the referee blew his whistle to signal full-time, meaning the Hornets took full advantage of results working in their favour to move into second place.
