REPORT | Hebburn Town 2 - 1 Stockton Town

Hebburn Town came from behind to win 2-1 against, Stockton Town at Hebburn Sports Ground on Tuesday evening. Amar Purewal's penalty and Olly Martin's spectacular effort were enough to overturn Adam Nicholson's opener.

The home side almost hit the front in the fifth minute when Tom Devitt's long diagonal ball found Joe Walton down the right. Walton pulled the ball across the face of goal, and when keeper Callum Roberts attempted to claw the ball away, it just wouldn't fall Hebburn's way.

After 15 minutes, a flowing Stockton move unlocked the Hebburn defence, creating a golden opportunity for Michael Fowler, but the striker dragged his shot across the face of goal.

In the 18th minute, Dean Briggs danced his way down the left-hand side of the box, with his effort forcing Roberts into a good save to his left.

Stockton came close on 20 when a great ball across the six-yard box from Kevin Hayes almost found a team mate, but a last-ditch touch from Devitt denied them and Shaun Newbrook was grateful to gather.

On the half hour mark, Cameron Painter fired across Newbrook's goal from the right of the area with his effort only narrowly wide.

A minute later, a Briggs corner caused mayhem in the Stockton area and then some more good work from Briggs seen the ball deflect via Robbie Spence to Purewal, but the Hebburn captain couldn't convert from 10-yards with his snapshot straight at Roberts.

On 38, Hayes hit a low 30 yards effort for Stockton, which Newbrook did well to get down to and tip it around the post for a corner.

Some great play between Walton and Dan Groves down the right on 40 resulted in the former whipping a ball across for Purewal, but his back post header was straight at Roberts.

Just seconds before the 45 was up, a Glen Butterworth corner wasn't properly cleared, and when the ball was turned back in, Tom Coulthard must have thought he'd opened the scoring with a fine header from which Newbrook made a magnificent one-handed saved before bouncing up to gather the loose ball.

The final chance of the half came Hebburn's way when Chay Liddle tried a 25-yard effort that flew past the post.

Just two minutes after the restart, Briggs dug out a cross from the left, which Purewal connected with at the near post, but the ball drifted agonisingly across the face of goal.

The visitors took the lead on 52 when a cross to the back stick was turned home by skipper Nicholson, although Newbrook felt he was impeded and received a yellow card for his protests.

Hebburn were almost immediately back on level terms when Aiden Heywood's ball in was stabbed inches past the upright by Spence.

On 59, Briggs took a long ball down on his chest, but his effort was blocked behind for a corner, while at the other end Michael Roberts threatened to break through on goal but he sliced his effort wide.

Hebburn drew level when referee Matthew Morton pointed to the spot for a foul in the Stockton area, with Purewal stepping up to dispatch the resulting penalty firmly into the bottom corner.

With 15 remaining on the clock, Heywood found Martin with a fantastic through ball down the left, but Martin couldn't find a way to goal after cutting inside and trying to get his shot away.

As the game approached the last ten minutes, Martin snapped another effort from just outside the area just past the post as the Hornets looked for a winner.

On 85, Jack Donaghy found Purewal in space, but he just wasn't able to work his way inside the defenders and his right-footed effort was blocked.

As the game entered five minutes of added time, Martin proved to be the match winner when he worked the ball into a shooting position and unleashed a superb curling effort into the top corner to keep Hebburn's 100 percent start to the season in tact.
