The central midfielder arrives at The Green Energy Sports Ground following several years with Newcastle United.
"It's good to be here," commented Smith upon the move.
"I've not played in a while, so I'm just looking forward to getting back into it.
"I wanted to get back into the game, and I know Danny Carson.
"He passed me onto Kevin [Bolam], and that's how it came about.
"It's a good set of lads - I've been in and out of training over the last few weeks, and they've all been quite welcoming."
The 26-year-old, previously on loan at Blackpool and Crewe Alexandra, joins the club following a few seasons out of football.
"I've not played for a while, this is a good club to get my foot back in," he added.
"I'm not looking to work my way up the pyramid, I just want to enjoy playing again, because that's what I wasn't doing for a long time.
"I can play anywhere in the midfielder, deep or advanced, and I can do a job out wide as well if needed."
Smith could be in contention to make his debut at the weekend, as The Hornets welcome Stocksbridge Park Steels to The Green Energy Sports Ground.
"I'm looking forward to it," the playmaker stated.
"I've been to watch a couple of games and it looks like a good set-up.
"The club gets a good crowd in, so it should be a good way to start on Saturday."
