Gary Henry was thrilled his side managed to get back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon.

Hebburn Town U23s travelled to Gosforth Bohemians following a string of defeats, including a 4-0 loss to Willington Quay Saints last time out.

The odds were certainly against Henry’s side, but a Robbie Gateshill penalty in the 82nd minute gave Hebburn a huge 1-0 victory.

“It was a massive win for us after three under par performances,” Henry assessed.

“I spoke before the game about being positive and self belief, but most importantly working as a team.

“Over the past three games we have played some good football in spells and up to the first goal against Willington we were probably the better team.

“But then we press the self destruct button and play as individuals instead of helping each other out.

“Yesterday in contrast, every single player grafted for the team and at times done running for each other which was really pleasing to see.

“Gosforth looked dangerous going forward, but we defended from the front and Jimmy [Lone] in goal was excellent making two great saves.”

Before the Willington defeat last week, Henry’s side had also lost to Rothbury and Newcastle Independent Cabrito from the league below.

With that win over first-placed Gosforth now in the bag, Henry hopes the U23s can find some consistency and finish their season strong.

“It was a massive response from recent weeks,” he stated.

“It was a brilliant performance and it shows what we can produce - hopefully it’s a kickstart for the remaining 13 games.

“We won’t go away and we’ll keep fighting until the very last game.

“After the last few weeks, the top two positions are out of our hands but we’ll keep working hard.

“The squad at the moment is almost injury-free so choosing a ream is difficult - leaving lads out isn't nice but it’s better than November and December when we had small numbers.

“Next we host North Shields Athletic and they’ve had a few good results recently so it’ll be another tough test for us.

“We go into that game now with a bit of confidence and hopefully we can be more consistent.”

The U23s’ next game against North Shields Athletic will take place at The Green Energy Sports Ground on Saturday, March 18 (2:30pm kick-off).
