Hebburn Town won a dramatic penalty shootout a 1-1 draw in the Durham Challenge Cup Final against Spennymoor Town at the Stadium of Light in front of over 2,000 spectators.
The first chance of the game came Hebburn’s way after four minutes when Joe Walton’s long ball was brought down by Olly Martin but James Curtis turned the ball behind for a corner, which was half cleared before Martin fired an effort over the top.
In the seventh minute a Walton free kick was dropped by Harry Flatters, with the resulting loose ball fired over by Sean Reid.
After 10, Mark Anderson’s corner for Spennymoor was headed over the top by Lebrun Mbeka as they threatened for the first time.
Corey McKeown broke from midfield with 12 on the clock, he twisted and turned to find himself space, but fired his effort straight at Shaun Newbrook who made a comfortable save.
Rob Ramshaw almost found the net for Spennymoor a minute later, but Newbrook got down low to his left to keep his tame effort out.
John Lufudu got into a couple of promising positions for Spennymoor, but Hebburn defended the situations well, before Anderson skewed a shot high and wide.
Martin broke free again for Hebburn on 19 following a weak back pass and was unlucky to see his effort blocked by the goalkeeper's legs.
Amar Purewal was then found by Robbie Spence in the box with his cross resulting in handball shouts being waved away by referee Andrew Kitchen - from the resulting corner, Reid headed narrowly wide.
On 28, McKeown was in one-on-one and lobbed the ball over Newbrook, only for Tom Devitt to make a dramatic last-ditch clearance off the line.
With 34 on the clock, McKeown almost squeezed an effort beyond Newbrook when under pressure just inside the area, but the Hebburn shot-stopper got down well to keep it out.
After 42, Lewis Thompson turned and shot for The Moors, but a deflection took it behind for another corner which was successfully cleared by the Hebburn defence.
With two minutes left to the break, Jake Hackett’s cross took a nick off a defender and almost caused problems for Flatters but the keeper held on.
Spennymoor made the breakthrough in the final minute of the half when McKeown’s cross to the near post was expertly turned home by Ramshaw.
There was little goalmouth action in the opening exchanges of the second period before the 55th minute.
Ramshaw played a ball across the face of goal for Lewis Thompson who almost got a decisive touch, with Devitt partially clearing, before the midfielder found the side-netting on his attempt to backheel beyond Newbrook.
Jack Donaghy tried his luck from 30 yards on the hour mark when he hit the ball well but just couldn’t keep his effort low enough for The Hornets.
On 62, Danny Greenfield was found in space at the edge of the Hebburn area and fired his effort towards the top corner, but Newbrook was equal to it with a superb one-handed save to tip it over the bar.
Purewal was almost in on goal for Daniel Moore's side on 65, but Curtis made a great recovery tackle with the ball rebounding off the Hebburn man for a goal kick.
Seconds after coming onto the pitch, James Harrison bent an effort from just outside the area, which seemed to have the beating of Flatters but was narrowly wide of the post.
Young substitute Liam Murray was next to try his luck from distance but again it was off target on 74.
Spennymoor almost doubled their advantage soon afterwards when they quickly counter-attacked and Greenfield’s low effort was parried away by Newbrook.
With five minutes left Flatters spilled Liam Henderson’s effort and was relieved to see the ball cleared for a corner.
The first corner was cleared, but the second corner from Murray was headed home by Purewal to level proceedings to the delight of the Hebburn fans.
Deep into stoppage time, Flatters’ clearance from the Spennymoor goal fell straight to Harrison but he couldn’t find the unguarded net from distance and so the game went to penalties.
Connor Shanks stepped up first and sent Newbrook the wrong way before Purewal did the same to Flatters.
Next up was Greenfield, who went to the left but Newbrook produced a fantastic low save - Henderson then sent Flatters the wrong way to give Hebburn the lead in the shootout.
Joe Tait then fired low into the corner beyond Newbrook’s reach before Wayne Phillips rolled home.
Charlie Watt was next up for Spennymoor and found the top corner, before Murray just fired beyond Flatters’ reach.
Riley Mouat squeezed under Newbrook’s body so it was left to Harrison to try to seal the win for The Hornets, and he did just that to bring the trophy back to Hebburn for the first time since 1992.
